20 May 2010- General Meeting
The Spring General Meeting was interesting and lively. The new
slate of officers was elected, Partners in Care presented their program --
a cooperative system of volunteer activities to support senior citizens. The two
largest items were the discussion and vote on an entrance
sign to West Laurel at the intersection of Route 198 and Bond Mill Road and a
recap from the District 21 elected officials.
The decision on the sign was
for a prefabricated sign with a solid polystyrene core and
concrete footing contingent upon funding from residents. If insufficient
funds are received a smaller rustic
wooden entry sign that has a sandblasted name etched into the wood. Please click here for examples
Department of Environmental Resources
– Who to Call. The Prince Georges County Department of Environmental Resources (DER) has
created a new branch office for our district. The new office on Ammendale Road
isn’t quite ready but the inspectors are! You met them at our Fall General
Meeting – Sunny, Andrew, Richard & Renee. If you observe any problems in your
neighborhood related to zoning, occupancy, care of the property, construction
without permits, or abandoned vehicles, write down the address and cross-street
and call our district team at 301-883-6130. The administrative team will then
ensure your problem is assigned to the correct inspector for action.
19 June Dumpster & Shredding Day
was a great success. West Laurel residents managed to fill
two dumpsters to the brim in less than four hours! Good job. The
West Laurel Civic Association is already working with the Prince George’s County
Waste Management Division for a repeat performance. Our goal is to get on
the County schedule for twice a year.
Thank you to Beth Evans, John Herbert & Cassandra Hostetler for
volunteering and making this event possible |

The West Laurel Recreation Council (WLRC)
meets the 4th Monday of the month (except June & July) from 7:30-8:30 PM at the WL Community Bldg. Please join us
to share your ideas for classes and community events.
Due to past and upcoming retirements of members, the WLRC, which works hand
in hand with Maryland-National Parks & Planning for programming, is in need of
neighbors with an interest in com-munity classes and fun "getting together with
neighbor" events to drop by and see what we are all about. Specific ways you
might think about getting involved include:
Class Coordinator. Assist instructors in scheduling classes, coordinate
listing of classes in SmartLink and other advertising venues, pro-vide liaison
between instructors and PG Parks.
Event Coordinator. Plan and coordinate, with assistance of WLRC members, one
of our annual events (Swim Night, Spring Egg Hunt, Yard Sale, Ice Cream Social,
Holiday Party, etc.).
Volunteer Coordinator. Support the event coordinator(s) by organiz-ing
volunteers, both adults and teens. Authorize Community Ser-vice Hour
contributions by teen volunteers.
Advertising Coordinator. Arrange advertising for WLRC events and classes
through local newspapers, school newsletters, printed flyers, and community
signs, as needed and appropriate to the event.
Please call Kim Passmore
(301-725-3157) or
Rush Kester
(301-490-1310) for more information.
